My Blogger connection is still slow and I still can't figure out why..

What a Fourth! Breakfast in Fremont, a picnic in the park, a heartland vegetarian dinner, a movie, and the company of cats: who could ask for more on a sunshiney Independence Day? It was good to see the Putnams before they headed off to Hawaii, and the gang at Volunteer park was huuuuge - and seemed to keep growing as the afternoon passed. We split fairly early to come home for a quiet evening. The cats weathered the fireworks without any major trauma.

We watched Deja Vu with Denzel Washington after dinner. Otis thought it was a straight crime drama until the time-travel elements started creeping in. Overall, I thought it was pretty well done. We may have to do a series on these time-a-kilter films - The Lake House was interesting, too, and there's that other Sandra Bullock thing, Premonition, coming out soon - and some Nick Cage movie, too, no?

New news (but not a new record)

Yesterday's high temperature matched the record of 87 degrees for this date, and it sure felt good. It looks like good weather for the next few days, and I don't have a whole lot to do for school, so maybe I'll actually get out on the Burke-Gilman for a few miles.

I'm really online tight now just to spread the word for the Full Belly Project, the social justice project that John and Olaiya have initiated. You can read all about it on the dedicated Full Belly Blog, but in short, it combines good eating with good works: fund-raising meals to support microlending (and other) programs around the world.

It is inspiring to see people walk the walk instead of just talking about social justice, and if I know these guys, this is just the tip of the iceberg. So give them your support; I've added the event nights to the growing social calendar on the LotU Blog.

I don't know where I cribbed this list from a year or so ago. I have to admit, there are three or four tunes on this list that I enjoy, but being the musical ignoramus that I am, I don't recognize most of the entries.

Bits and bobs to begin the year

New Year's Eve:
Otis and I passed a quiet evening at home, watching the original miniseries of the Battlestar Galactica reboot before participating in the traditional countdown. Ever since Yojimbo lent us season two, Otis has been hot on this show. Go figure.

Two observations from the night: Dick Clark is frakking amazing; you can't tell veggie pigs-in-a-blanket from the meat kind. Mmmmm.

Blackout blog

Boo-ya! It has been a whirlwind since post #500 -- literally. There is so much to tell, but I'm going to wait until I'm not blogging on a laptop in a Barnes & Noble to tell it all properly. Suffice to say that grading continues, that Otis and I did a nice job on Thursday of getting her art show ready, that lots of great friends but no new customers braved the stormy night to come over, that the windstorm put on quite a show and then knocked our power out at 3:00 am Friday, and that it's still not back. And that doesn't even include our adventures at breakfast, lunch, and dinner today! Huzzah!
